Even if the route from home to destination is safe and comfortable for cycling, if the bike parking is insufficient or unsafe, people will be discouraged from cycling for transportation. This course will look at different types of bike parking and what types are appropriate for different locations. It will also address the value to businesses and to employers of providing bike parking for their customers and employees.

This unit talks about why cycle parking is important and how it fits into the transportation chain. It will also get you started looking at the cycle parking in your own town or city.

Is it really necessary to provide cycle parking in order to attract cyclists? Yes!!

A number of factors determine how high cycle parking is on the priority list in a city. These factors create either drivers or barriers to creating the cycle parking needed to serve current and potential cyclists.

The type of cycle parking that is appropriate for a given location depends on how long people expect to leave their bikes there.

Because people have different reasons to travel and different destinations, you need a mix of different types of cycling facilities to meet the need for short-term parking as well as long-term storage.

If a lack of cycle parking seems to be an issue in your town or city, simply providing more may not necessarily improve the situation. In the City of London, they found that poorly designed and/or poorly located parking does not appeal to cyclists and is not used. Careful consideration needs to be given to the location and type of cycle parking as well as to access and to promotion to encourage the use of parking facilities.
