Decoupling parking from housing
Off-street parking needs to be financed from somewhere. In the case of apartments and other housing, these costs are often passed on to the residents. What does a neighborhood look like when its housing is decoupled from parking? This book will show you.
2. Case example: Vauban (1)
Vauban is a newly planned neighborhood, about 4 km south of the city center in Freiburg, Germany, with 2000 apartments and 5000 residents. Vauban has 0.5 parking spaces per apartment, and most of the apartments have their parking facilities on the edge of the residential area. This increases the walking distance to the car, which also reduces the use of the car.
All households that own a car have to buy a parking space in the parking facility. Parking spaces cost between €18,500 and €22,500 and the maintenance costs are about €70 per month.
