Decoupling parking from housing
Off-street parking needs to be financed from somewhere. In the case of apartments and other housing, these costs are often passed on to the residents. What does a neighborhood look like when its housing is decoupled from parking? This book will show you.
3. Case example: Vauban (2)
The neighbourhood also has a car sharing scheme with 12 cars (i.e. 1 car per 417 residents) and 39% of the households are active users of the car sharing scheme. All households also receive:
- free membership in the car sharing scheme
- a 20% discount when they use the car sharing scheme
- a discount on their public transport ticket
- access to a cooperative bike maintenance area where residents can have their bikes repaired free of charge
The residential area also incorporates traffic calming measures and the speed limit is walking speed.
Car ownership is about 160 cars per 1000 residents. In a comparable area the car ownership is about 390 per 1000 residents. The modal split in Vauban is (in number of trips):
- 16% cars
- 19% public transport
- 64% bike or foot
