Involvement of citizens in process of redesigning the public space can be very useful for many reasons. First in process of defining the problems, choosing the appropriate solutions and then in implementation. Through the participation process citizens get sense of ownership, so that will provide easier implementation of measure. (in previous tasks, I gave some examples when there were many complaints from citizens, probably that wouldn't happen if public was involved and informed before implementation).

Public participation in process of decision making process related to redesigning public space is not common in our city yet. But that has started to change a little bit when we started to work on our first SUMP. We got interesting comments and suggestions from citizens for future projects, during events/workshops/survey that we organized, but still, we have to learn a lot about public participation process.

Module 3.4: Example; FLOW in Munich

Task 5

The Munich example could be compared to our local context in major urban arteries.  In León, most successful measures in these main streets include traffic calming (always effective); curb extensions in sidewalk corners; and LED light systems for pedestrian crossings (both embedded in crosswalks or in crossing-signal posts).

The methodology applied in the Munich example has been used in Lisbon in some projects which I was part of. The most notorious example is the urban renewal of two main avenues (Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, Avenida da República) and the adjacent public space (I referred to this project in task 3).

Similar methodology exist in Belgrade, but with less focus on cycling, but with walking as important part. In last ten year some big city arterial were redesigned. Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra was a success with increased level of service for walking and public transport, as well as for cars too. On the other hand, Vojvode Stepe street have failed to meet the expectation of delivering better condition for PT and walking. Munich example can help in improvement of existing practice especially in showing the way how modelling walking and cycling can create benefits.

Yes, that pedestrian are the priority in the urban development, reduce the speed, calm the traffic, improving the cycling infraestructures and achieving a better city is the principal objetive. And that a workshop developed with citizens could give the key in the renewal plans.

Yes, I have. But the said practice is difficult to implement in my country to political non-seriousness and incompetent administrative officers in the government ranks.
